Evangelina was more like a wildcat than an Oak Blossom when Jack and Henry rode in and she saw Jack’s face. She was cooing and humming, working so softly he almost felt no pain. She had him sitting and was cleaning his wounds before Henry even got out of the saddle. “Don’t worry, Jack,” Rupert laughed, “I’ll take care of your horse.”

Evangelina was fast and thorough, removed chunks of rock and grit, and he felt her soft fingers cleaning all the wounds. He looked right into her big soft brown eyes, and wanted to feel her close to him, wanted to hold her, and knew he simply couldn’t. She cooed and made little sounds as she got all the cuts closed up, all the bleeding stopped, and stepped back to look deep into Jack’s eyes as well.

“Thank you,” he said, taking her hand. She let him hold it for several long moments, then took it back.

“You be careful, Jack,” she said, letting her eyes continue to bore deep into his. “I don’t want you to get hurt,” and she got up fast and slipped away. Jack was back at work within half and hour, but still carrying the image of a beautiful young girl tending his wounds. He was able to look straight into her wonderful and big brown eyes as she doctored his cuts and scrapes. He offered as many smiles as he could manage.

He remembered how she cooed and smiled back at him, getting out chunks of rock and grit that had been blown into his face by the ricocheting bullet. She said, “You’re lucky that pieces of the bullet didn’t hit you. You might have some small scars, but that will just prove that you are big and strong, a ferocious warrior to be feared,” and those thoughts were burned into his memory.
